Vapour production - how to increase or decrease vape clouds?

There are a number of factors that can affect the vapour production of your vape. For those of you who are cloud chasers or who would like to alter the vapour production of your vape, read on to know how you can achieve this.


Increasing airflow increases ecigarette vapour production

Air flowing through the coil means that cool air is being provided to the hot coil allowing condensation to take place.The more the airflow, the more the condensation taking place resulting in more vapour production. Similarly, the less the airflow, the less the condensation taking place resulting in less vapour production.

Other considerations:

  • You may find that increasing/decreasing the airflow has an impact on throat hit and flavour as well. Hence you may need to mix and match with a variety of settings to achieve the perfect balance between flavour, throat hit and vapour production.
  • Airflow also affects the tightness of the draw you receive, the more airflow the more airier the vape, the less airflow the more tighter the draw.


Increasing power increases ecigarette vapour production

Adjusting the power or temperature of your device can only be done if you have a variable voltage, variable wattage or temperature control device. If your device has temperature control then you can directly adjust the temperature settings to alter the temperature of your device. If your device doesn’t have temperature control you can alter the power settings (by changing either the wattage or voltage of the device), which will also alter the temperature of the coil.

Increasing the power or temperature settings takes the existing elements of your eliquid (flavour, nicotine strength, PG/VG ratio etc) and multiplies their effect. Hence, if for example you are using a 50VG eliquid, the vapour production would be greater at 50W than 30W.
Moreover, increasing power increases vapour because the more power provided to the coil, means that the coils heat faster and hotter.

Other considerations:

  • Remember, increasing the power/temperature will not only have an effect on vapour production but also on throat hit and flavour. Hence, you you may need to play around with a variety of settings to achieve your desired output.
  • Since increasing power means increasing the temperature of coils, this means that the higher power you use the hotter the vape you will get. Hence, you will notice that every tank has air holes in them as this is needed. This is why it is not a good idea to totally close off the airholes in some cases, especially when vaping at very high power/temperature as it will provide a very hot vape. Unless ofcourse that is what you prefer.
  • Before you put up the voltage/wattage/temperatureat higher settings, ensure that your tank is able to handle the power setting. The power you can achieve by adjusting the settings on your mod depends on the resistance of the coil you are using in your tank. If you use a higher power than the coil can handle this will burn the coil. Hence, one needs to determine what power/temperature the coil can handle.

Coil resistance

The lower the resistance of your coil, the easier it is to achieve the higher temperatures required to produce more vapour quickly. This is because there is lower resistance to the power or temperature outputof the mod.

Tanks which use coils that have a resistance below 1 ohm are known as Sub-ohm tanks. Sub-ohm tanks enable one to achieve the lowest resistances.

Other considerations:

  • When choosing the resistance of the coil, ensure that the coils resistance can be used with your mod or battery. Usually coils will have the voltage/wattage/temperature range that it can be used with, written on the coil itself.

PG/VG Ratio

VG has a thicker consistency and helps produces more clouds, it is also said that this is due to its ability to capture molecules of air moisture.

Other considerations:

  • Remember not all devices work with High VG (above 50VG) eliquids due to its thick viscosity. Check whether your device is compatible with high VG eliquids.
  • Increasing the VG content along with increasing vapour production, will also mean reduced PG content in the eliquid (unless using a 50/50 ratio) hence, decreasing the throat hit and flavour. Hence, you might need to play around with a variety of different settings in order to achieve the desired output and balance between vapour production, flavour and throat hit.


Achieving the right output is all a matter of experimentation. One needs to experiment with altering the different factors to understand the affect they have on their vaping experience. Once you understand how different factors influence your vape, you can then mix and match to find what suits you best.
